One-time Manchester City target Edinson Cavani is closing on a move to Chelsea. The Uruguayan, who scored three times for Napoli against City in last season’s Champions League, is in talks over a £35m move to Stamford Bridge according to reports.

City boss Roberto Mancini is an admirer of Cavani, along with his former Napoli team-mate and now Paris St Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Chelsea have already invested heavily this summer but Blues owner Roman Abramovich is ready to continue spending and clearly sees Napoli striker Edinson Cavani as an ideal replacement for Didier Drogba. Clearly any successful move for the Uruguayan will cost a small fortune and let’s face it both the West London side and Manchester City have the funds to start a full scale bidding war.

The 25 year old Napoli man has netted 66 goals in two hugely successful seasons at the San Paolo but it seems possible Cavani would push for a move now that he has seen his team-mate Ezequiel Lavezzi leave for PSG. Also the lack of Champions League football could lead the striker to pursue a move to a side who can offer him a seat back at the top table.

Chelsea’s need is clearly move pressing than Roberto Mancini’s, after all the Italian has the likes of Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko to call upon.

The Blues have already spent around £38m to bring in Eden Hazard and Marko Marin but the departure of Drogba coupled with Fernando Torres’s questionable form may well lead to the Stamford Bridge side being ready to fork out the required £35m it would take to persuade Cavani’s Naples side to sell their prized asset.
